OBITUARY

MR A. W. OXLEY

Mr Antony Watson Oxley, whose death occurred last week, was born in Dunedin in 1858. Later his parents moved to Waikouaiti, where his fatherwas appointed manager for Mr John Jones. There he went to school, and in 1872 he joined the Telegraph Department. While in the department he served in various capacities in different towns in the Dominion, finally retiring in 1917 owing ,to ill-health when superintendent of telegraphs at Nelson. He was in the forefront of every movement for the betterment of his" fellow-officers, and was one of the founders of the Post and Telegraph Association, being its first general secretary. MRS GEORGE DASH

(Special) WAIMATE, Aug. 21. One of the largest funerals seen here for many years was accorded the remains of Mrs George Dash, whose death occurred at the age o* 76 years. Mrs Dash, who was Mayoress of Waimate for a total period of 18 years, held that position during two years of the 1914-18 war, and concluded her second term two years after the outbreak of the last war. She topk an active part in war work, including the activities of the Lady Galway Guild and the Red Cross Society. , Mrs Dash, who was a daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Stevenson, was born in Waimate district, and her marriage to Mr Dash took place in 1901. She was a member of the Girl Guide movement, the Waimate Ladies’ Benevolent Society, the Plunket Society, the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the Women's Institute, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and of temperance societies and the Prohibition League. She extended hospitality to visitors from all parts of New Zealand and from overseas countries’ who came to speak on questions of social reform. Mrs Dash is survived by her husband and one son, Mr Hugh Dash, of Palmerston North.
