Friday, August 16 (Before Mr H W. Bundle, S.M.) Drunkenness Two first offenders for drunkenness were each fined £l, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Alleged Theft of Tyres John Francis Samuel Keen, a labourer, aged 32. was charged with breaking and entering the shop of Mosgiel Motors on July 22 and stealing 15 motor tyres, valued at £124 11s, the property of Trevor Lewis Gibson.—On the application of Chief Detective T. V. Hall, wno said that other charges were pending, the accused was remanded to August 26. False Pretences Charge Thomas Gibson Waters, a salesman, aged 61 (Mr J. S. D. More), was charged with obtaining a cheque for £360 from Norman Allan Troon on May 29 by falsely representing that he was selling the complainant a section of land and that he intended to build a dwelling thereon for £lß3o.—On the application of Chief Detective Hall the accused was remanded to August 19, bail being fixed in his own recognisance at £IOO, and one surety of £IOO, on condition that he reported daily to the police. Stuart Canynge Bingham, a civil servant, 54 years of age, pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor car on August 15.—Senior Sergeant D. Vaughan said that at 5.15 p.m. on Thursday Traffic Inspector Young was on patrol in Bridgman street when he saw a car which had apparently been involved in a recent accident. He stopped the car and found the accused to be in a state of intoxication. The accused was examined by Dr E. R. Harty, who certified that he was in a state of intoxication. He had not been in any trouble before.—Mr C. 11. Stevens said that the accused had driven to Tapanui and back that day without having had a meal, and when he reached Green Island on the return journey he had some spirits. These had a much greater effect than he anticipated. The accused said he had not been involved in any accident, a certain amount of grass that was adhering to one mudguard of his car having got there as the result of grading operations on the Tapanui road.—The magistrate said it was unfortunate that this class of offence was again on the increase. It was a serious matter and the accused would be fined £2O, including £1 Is medical expenses, and would be prohibited from driving for 12 months. Maintenance William Christian Reinke, who was proceeded against on a complaint for separation and maintenance orders, was ordered to pay*£l 5s a week, back maintenance being fixed at £ls. ,
