THE PUBLIC DEBT
HUGE WAR INCREASE The Budget disclosed that the public, debt at March 31 last reached a total of £624,511,000, an increase of £21,273,000 during the last financial year. Of the total amount the recent war was responsible for £221,775,000, all of which was domiciled in New Zealand. Since 1935 the civil debt held overseas had been reduced by £47,645,000.
