COST OF £32,000,000 MAINTENANCE OF J FORCE Though he pointed out that the War Expenses Account had been* brought to a stage which might be termed. " mopping-up operations,” Mr Nash announced in his Budget speech that expenditure for this year for the residual costs still chargeable to the account was estimated at £32,000,000. Discussing this account Mr Nash said that it had been possible at this stage to eliminate and transfer to the Consolidated Fund continuing defence items and to limit the use of the account to adjusting unsettled commit 1 ments of the past, meeting the cost of the J Force,, and paying certain items of the rehabilitation programme. The anticipated war expenditure of £32,000,000 was made up as follows: Expenditure for this year for the residual costs still chargeable to the account is estimated at £32,000,000, as follows:
Mr Nash added that the estimates for the Service Departments covered costs connected with the J Force, estimated to amount to £4,000,000, the balance being required to meet ae; counts unpaid at March 31 last and rapidly diminishing charges such as for deferred pay, leave privileges, etc., which would be incurred this year.
