DILIGENT WORKER
Mrs Lilian Patricia O’Leary, wife of the newly-appointed Chief Justice of New Zealand, has been a busy worker for servicemen and prisoners of war during the past six years. She was a foundation executive member of the Army, Navy and Air Force Club, the first full-t.me centre to operate in Wellington for the entertainment of servicemen. It opened a week after war was declared, and Mrs O'Leary, who was its official hostess, worked indefatigably in its Interests. She was also chairman of the Comforts Committee a subsidiary committee of the A.N.A. executive and a source of financial support for club activities. She packed parcels for prisoners of war, convening a group of women helpers under the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society.A keen supporter of the Plunket Society, Mrs O’Leary started a sub-committee of the society at Thorndon and was its president for some time. She has been a mfember of the Wellington Women’s Club for more than 21 years, and of the Victoria League for longer than that Mrs O’Leary is the fifth daughter of a very early Wellington pioneer couple. Mr and Mrs James Gallagher. She has one son, Humphrey Maurice who is at present studying at a Redemptorist Monastery in Ballarat, Australia, and sinct* 1918 she has also brought up the two children of a deceased sister.
