TREATMENT OF CANCER
SPECIAL HOSPITALS SUGGESTED (Special) AUCKLAND, Aug. 15. “ The incidence of cancer is the skeleton in the cupboard of every home, people show the greatest reluctance even to discuss the disease, and regard it with horror instead of facing up to it,” said Sir Ernest Davis, president of the Auckland Division of the British Ehnpire Cancer Campaign Society at the organisation’s annual general meeting. During the meeting a member of the Medical Committee stated that one-quarter of all people who live beyond the age of 40 contract a form of cancer.
There were indications of long-term planning for the care of patients suffering from cancer said Sir Ernest. Recommendations had been made in the past that there should be established a cancer hospital, and there seemed to be a great deal in favour of such a proposal. With the present system of hospital organisation, however, it would seem that there were difflcultes to such a scheme. Nevertheless, the society, with the backing of the public, should plan towards the systematic care of the specific problem.
