SOLDIER CANDIDATES
Sir,—May I ask ” Common Sense ’’ why go to Russia to set up a legation which up to the present has cost us well over £40,000 for a return of nil, when there are other nations much nearer home, and much more friendly to us who are not honoured with a New Zealand legation? I would suggest that instead of legations at Canberra, Ottawa, and Moscow, we have experienced and capable representatives attached to the Britisn Embassy in each of these countries, and spend money saved in buying wallboard and other materials from Sweden and % other countries that are willing to supply our needs, and so allow us to get on with the job of building homes for our returned soldifers. I would remind “ Common Sense ’ that if the Labour Government had honoured the pledge given in 1935 it would abolish the Legislative Council, if elected, there would be no such place to-day, and we would not witness the pitiful but expensive sight of old trade union secretaries, some of them approaching the 80 and 90 mark in years, posing as modem and up-to-date statesmen.—l am, etc., August 10. Matilda.
