LITTLE RESISTANCE OFFERED Close Guard at Police Court (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 12. Arrested at gun-point in a guest house, Sidney Grant, aged 28, was later charged at the North Sydney Police Court to-day with the murder of Detective V. D. Aheam at Matraville yesterday. He was remanded to the Central Court on August 20, and bail was refused. He was taken from court handcuffed to a police officer and heavily escorted. Three other police cars followed the car which took him to the North Sydney Police Station. Police who followed him into the station carried four Thompson submachine guns and two ammunition cases which they said had been found in scrub near Roseville. t Following the biggest manrhunt ever organised by the New South Whies police, a patrol car went to a North Sydney guest house, and three constables covered the exits while a sergeant and a detective went upstairs. With guns drawn, they opened an unlocked door and found the accused sitting at a table eating. There was a struggle, but no shooting. Grant was later charged with stealing four Thompson sub-machine guns and two cases of ammunition, the property of the Commonwealth Naval Depot at Rushcutters' Bay, and having an unlicensed pistol in his possession on July 15 and August 11. Eight charges of breaking and entering and stealing clothing, suit lengths, radio sets, and motor tyres and accessories were also preferred.
