REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY
NORTH OTAGO BEATEN In both representative hockey games played at Timgru on Saturday, South Canterbury secured wins against North Otago teams. The first eleven was defeated by 4—l, and the second eleven 4—2. The grounds were fast, and a good standard of hockey was maintained. In the first eleven game, South Canterbury proved superior to North Otago, the defence being the main cause for North Otago’s defeat, R. Bay, the South Canterbury goalie, played a very sound game and saved on many occasions. The full-backs. Lambert and Andrews, were always in position, and Cowles, righthalf, was dangerous when in possession of the „ ball. Blair, North Otago's custodian, and B. Anderson and I. Sherwin (full-backs), played well on defence. South Canterbury attacked in the opening stages of the game, and Cowles sent his forwards away to make the position dangerous for North Otago when Blair failed to clear. Anderson obstructed in the circle, but he cleared from the ensuing penalty bully. North Otago attacked, and Coffee sent in a good centring shot, but the forwards were penalised for off-side play. South Canterbury immediately swung to the attack, and from a pass from Anear, Bullen snapped up to score for South Canterbury. Shortly afterwards. R. Sowden gained possession near South Canterbury’s goal, but his attempt at goal was too high. The home side once again gained the advantage and Bullen scored from a penalty bully, after which Andreassand received the ball from Hughes and scored. The score at half-time was 3—o. Early in the second spell. McCabe and Taylor placed North Otago on attack, but Sowden’s shot at goal went wide. Bullen secured his third goal from a penalty corner, and Coffee, who gained possession from a bully, made a good run to pass to Taylor, who scored for North Otago. North Otago were attacking at the final whistle, but there was no alteration to the score. Messrs N Pinder and E. Hawkey were the umpires.
In the second eleven match, the teams were more evenly matched. Scorers for South Canterbury were P. Mitchell (3) and C. J. Paterson, while A. A. Mitchell and A. Sutherland scored for North Otago. Messrs H. Hore and W. Gotv were the referees.
