NORTH END EXTENSION

INCLUSION IN BOROUGH Members of the Oamaru Borough Council. Waitaki County Council, Housing Department, and Public Works Department met at the North End on Saturday morning to discuss the extension of the borough and the inclusion of an area in the Waitaki County into the borough. The Mayor (Mr J. C. Kirkness), Crs G. E. Glen, A. Bain, A. Wilson. A. R. Tait, M. F. E. Cooney, E. S. Stubbs, and Messrs K. A. Ballinger (borough engineer) and J. Branthwaite (town clerk) represented the Borough Council; Cr J. Rodman (chairman), Crs R. B. Meek, S. M. Taylor, W. E. Aubrey, W. J. Gillies, D. E. Paton, A. H. McKinnon, and Messrs J. Wareing (county engineer) and G. R. JolJ (county clerk), the Waitaki County; Messrs J. V. Jebson (district supervisor), J. Crawshaw (land planner), and F. Quilter (engineer), the Housing Department; and Messrs T. Garlick and Lane, the Public Works Department. Mr Kirkness stated that the Housing Department had made inquiries regarding its block of land in Arundel street and its incorporation in the borough. Romison’s. Ltd., who were building a factory just outside the borough boundary, had requested that their 19 acres be incorporated in the borough. Such proposals had led to the meeting, but the borough had as yet made no definite plans. The question had been raised that the borough should take in more land, up to Abattoir road on the right of the main highway, and up to the Eveline Church on the left, with a view to development under the town planning scheme. Strip development had taken place along the main road, and consequently the services were running long distances with little return. Mr Rodman said that the County Council had attended with an open mind, and besides realising that the borough was extending they were watching the interests of their own ratepayers. Representatives of the Government departments also gave their opinions, and, after a discusison on the drainage problem, which, speakers maintained, was too large an undertaking for either the borough or the county, the Mayor asked councillors to investigate the question of taking in the area, or a larger area which would be developed under town planning.
