FORWARDS IMPROVE

GOOD WIN FOR ALHAMBRA Conditions at Port Chalmers were against a good display ox football when the home side was dereated by Alhambra by 12 points to S. A strong, gusty wind from the south-west made kicking a hazardous undertaking, while half the ground was soon a quagmire and considerably hampered the players. The Alhambra forwards showed more combination than usual, and were also superior in scrummaging, these proving the deciding factors in a game which was almost entirely confined to the forwards. K. Matheson, the outstanding forward on the field, dashed over from a ruck within a minute of the start, and a penalty goal and another try saw tire city team leading by 9—o at half time. ■ Port Chalmers was unable to take full advantage of the wind in the second spell, though there were one or two promising efforts, in which J. Henderson and H. Kobeixson were always conspicuous. Any hopes, however, that the side would be able to make up the leeway were dashed early, when Alhambra added another three points as the result of a try. Smart following up by J. Smith enabled that player to score for Port, but. notwithstanding some poor attempts at tackling and other weaknesses in defence, the Alhambra forwards never lost control. For the winners, tries were scored by R. Matheson, M. Seekup and O. Parker, and A. McDon--aid kicked a penalty goaL J. Smith scored a try for Port Chalmers. The referee was Mr J. King.
