Congress Party Approached
ASKED TO FORM GOVERNMENT
Moslem Position Uncertain
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 10. The Daily Telegraph’s Wardha correspondent says that the Viceroy of India, Viscount Wavell, with the British Government’s approval, has sent a letter to the chairman of the Congress Working Committee, Pandit Nehru, inviting the Congress Party to form an Interim Government for India. Congress acceptance of the invitation is taken for granted.
The issue of whether or not Moslem League members will be included in the Government is apparently being left to
the decision of Congress. It is understood that Viscount Wavell’s letter did not specifically mention the Moslem League, but clearly Congress will be forced by circumstances to obtain the league’s co-opera-tion.
A message from Bombay says that the Congress Working Committee passed a resolution reaffirming its acceptance of the British long-term plan for India.. The resolution, referring to the Moslem League's contention that the earlier acceptance by Congress was only conditional, says the Working Committee did not approve all the British proposals. Nevertheless, it accepted the scheme in its entirety.
