FUTURE OF TRIESTE
FOUR SEPARATE PROPOSALS EARLY CLASH PREDICTED (ReCi 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 10. ■ Britain, America, Russia, and France are forwarding separate proposals for the future of Trieste to the Secretarygeneral of the Paris Conference, says Reuter’s Paris correspondent. The difference in conception between the Russian plan and those of the three other Powers is likely to lead to one of the sharpest clashes during the conference. The British, American, and French drafts follow the line of providing minimum guarantees for the independence of the free territory of Trieste against future encroachments from either the east or the west.
The Russian plans appear to tie the new free territory economically so closely to Jugoslavia that some quarters fear' that it might in practice become a Jugoslav province.
