GIFT PICTURES
Three more pictures have been presented by residents of Dunedin to the proposed art gallery in Invercargill. Mr T. H. Jenkin, chairman of the Art Committee of the University Association of Southland, announced at the annual meeting of the association on Monday night that a letter had been received from Mr A. A. Paape, of Dunedin, proposing the gift of two pictures The first was “Breakers, in the Mediterranean,” by E. W. Christmas, to be given in memory of two sons of Mr Paape killed during the war, and the second was “The Schoolgirl," by Grace Joel, a Dunedin artist who studied in England. This picture would be given in memory of two pioneers* Mr John Angus Mitchell and Marjory Mitchell.
Another Dunedin citizen, who formerly lived in Invercargill and wishes to lemain anonymous, has offered to purchase and present “The Maori Soldier.” by Roy Dickison. Mr Jenkin also stated that an offer had been made of the loan to Invercargill of a number of pictures from the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. This offer had been accepted, and it was proposed to make a selection of the pictures in about a week's time.
