WOMEN’S HOCKEY

LEADING TEAMS WIN Playing, on dry, fast grounds that were much improved after rolling and by the marking of the circles in white, the A 1 Grade teams displayed some fast and interesting hockey. Momona narrowly failed to produce a major surprise, in fully extending Kings, -the leading team. The results in the A 1 Grade were as follows: Training Col. 7 University .. 4 Kings ....... 3 Momona 2 Taleri .. .. o Dunedin .. .. 0 Otago, a bye. The following Is the position of the teams:—

WIN FOR TRAINING COLLEGE In a game played In a fine spirit, Trainr ing College was rather lucky to win. In the first half the College forwards played some sparkling hockey and overwhelmed the University defence, to lead by 5 goals to 1 at half time. For a period in the second half the College team slackened, and fast, penetrating forwards on the University side took full advantage of it. J. King, M. Watt and P. Morgan combined well 'to score three goals in a few minutes, which put a different complexion on the game, but College rallied and scored two more goals. B. Sparrow was outstanding for College, and V. Robinson was prominent. The umpires were Messrs W. McLeod and S. Todd. MOMONA UNLUCKY The main match, between Kings and Momona, produced some good hockey. W. Middleton played a brilliant game for Momona and scored two goals. The score at half time was 2—all, a mistake by the Momona goalkeeper being responsible for one of Kings goals. The Momona defence bottled up two good players in M. Eaton and H. Harley, and the losers made valiant efforts to equalise. H. Harley scored two goals for Kings and M. Eaton one. The umpires were Messrs ,H. Sew Hoy and T. Mulholland. A POOR GAME Numerous free hits for offside play and for obstruction marred the game between Taieri and Dunedin, which ended in a draw with no score. The defence on both sides was too good for the forwards. For Taieri, M. Ives and I. Baird played cleverly, and E. Weddell was the best of a poor forward line. L. MacArthur and D. Leggatt were prominent on defence for Dunedin, and both showed good anticipation and stick work. R. Sew Hoy played her usual safe game In goal. The umpires were Messrs C. Hayward and F. Scrivener. Bl Grade.—Otago 1, Kings 1; University D 6, Training College D 1.
