SOUTHERN HOLDS LEAD UNIVERSITY A HARD PRESSED The first round of the Otago Rugby Football Union’s senior competition was completed on Saturday in fine weather and on grounds which were in excellent order. The main match, between Zingari-Richmond and Dunedin, attracted a crowd of about 2000 to Carisbrook, where a lively game was won by Zingari-Richmond by 10 points to nil. The competition leaders, Southern, had a comfortable win by 19 points to 3 against Port Chalmers on the latter’s ground, but University A was hard pressed to beat the solid Taieri team at Mosgiel by 9 points to 6, the winning points coming in the final minutes of the game. Kaikorai beat Pirates B by 17 points to 9, and a minor upset was provided by the University B team, ■ which defeated Union, winner the previous week over Kaikorai, by 27 points to 14. Training College defeated Alhambra fairly decisively by 22 points to 9. Pirates A had the bye. The first six teams, which will meet one another in the second round, are Southern, University A, Pirates A, Kaikorai, Zingari-Richmond and Dunedin. Training College failed to qualify in this list by only one point. University B has moved up from tenth to eighth place.
