WOOL FOR SPAIN

WATERSIDERS RELUCTANT MORE INFORMATION AWAITED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 27. The watersiders’ national officials met the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, yesterday, and asked for more information about the sale of wool to Spain. Mr Fraser is now making further inquiries of the British Government, to whom the wool belongs. “ It is problematical whether we will load the wool in any circumstances,” said the secretary of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union, Mr T. Hill. “In 1937 we levied ourselves five shillings a head to fight Franco, and gave a further lump sum of £4OO for that purpose. To-day we still don’t like Franco’s Spain, and we don’t think there are many New Zealanders who do. The New Zealand Labour Government was acclaimed at Geneva for its refusal to recognise the Franco regime, and it remains one of the few Governments which has not recognised Franco.” There are 32,000 bales of wool waiting in New Zealand stores on consignment to Spain, and they are due to leave New Zealand in three shipments.
