WIN FOR ENGLAND SOUTH ISLAND BACKS OUTCLASSED (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 27. England beat the South Island by 24 points to 12 in the first game of their New Zealand tour at Christchurch 10-day. The match was marked by breath-taking movements by the English backs. Lewthwaite being particularly dangerous The South Island forwards played with great vigour, but the co-ordination in the backs was not Impressive. The South Island forwards opened with a rally into the English twenty-five. After a scrum five yards from the line England infringed, and Davison made no mistake with a good kick. South Island 2, England nil. Knowelden and Davies exploited a scissors pass, which took play to midfield, and Ward and Davek-Davles slipped through with ease for Ward to score and convert: England s', South Island 2. Play was inside the English twenty-five when W. Mountford, following up, dribbled past Jones and crossed for a beautiful try. Ord converted. South Island 7, England 5. Faultless English back movements took play the length of the field. Ward sent on for Knowelden to score. Ward converted. England 10. South Island 7.
