STATE SAWMILL
TAPANUI FOREST PRODUCTS A SUGGESTED ALTERNATIVE (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, July 25. An inquiry whether a decision had been made to establish a large State sawmill at Conical Hills was contained in notice of a question given by Mr T. L. Macdonald (Oppn., Mataura) to the Commissioner of State Forests, Mr C. F. Skinner, in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Macdonald asked, in event of such a decision having been made, would the Minister reconsider it with a view to adopting the alternative of allowing a number of privately owned mills to operate in the Pomahaka -Valley.
In a note to his question, Mr Macdonald said that, smaller sawmills located at' suitable points in the district would reduce the wasteful cartage of logs. They could be established sooner and could begin production earlier than a large and elaborate State mill.
