VALUABLE WORK

THE PLUNKET SOCIETY

RECORD OF COMMUNITY SERVICE “The Plunket Society is fulfilling a valuable duty in Dunedin, and I congratulate it on the completion of another highly successful year,” said the Mayor, Mr D. C. Cameron, at the annual meeting yesterday of the Dunedin branch of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children. The Mayor, who presided over the meeting, was moving the adoption of the annual report, and he expressed pride in the activities of the branch. "Your annual report is a record of community service,” he said: “It is a record of which any city would be proud, and Dunedin is proud of its society and nurses. -The work, which was founded by Sir Truby King in this city nearly 40 years ago, Is being faithfully carried on.” The seconder of the motion, Mr A. C. Cameron, congratulated the branch on Its healthy, virile position. It was, however, facing serious problems. In common with other branches, he said, it was confronted by the problem of increased costs. The spiral was still ascending, and there was no indication yet that it had reached its peak. Government Assistance

Mr Cameron referred to the urging by Mr P. G. Connolly, M.P., upon Parliament of the need for an increase in the Government subsidy to the society. "The Dominion Executive of the society,” he said, “ considers that the subsidy should be increased. At present it is about one-third of the amount raised by the society’s voluntary effort. It is thought that it should be increased to one-half. In view of the assistance given to other causes and the worthy nature of this work, a strong case for such an increase can be made. The question is in the melting pot at present.” The fact that the Dunedin branch had been the first to have a mobile unit in operation was mentioned by Mr Cameron. “As in so many other things,” he said, “Dunedin has led New Zealand in this respect.” The Karitane bureau, he added, was another valuable innovation, and it was hoped that the fullest use would be made of it.
