SENTENCES REDUCED

AMERICAN SERVICEMEN MANY THOUSANDS OF CASES WASHINGTON. (Rec. 7 p.m.) July 7. The Special War Department Clemency Board has reduced the sentences of almost 20.000 soldiers convicted of serious offences, mostly during the war. Almost one-third of the 22,500 prisoners whose cases were reviewed to June 30 have already been set free, and another third is scheduled to be released in 1947. More than 32,000 prisoners have been restored to duty before the expiration of their sentences, thus giving them the opportunity to earn honourable discharges. Of the sentences reviewed, 85 per cent, were reduced. The prisoners remaining at the end of 1946 will comprise only those convicted of the most serious civil and military offences, such as murder or desertion to avoid hazardous duty.
