RESTRICTION LIFTED
“ BLACK ” LIST OF TRADERS SYMPATHISERS WITH AXIS WASHINGTON, (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) July 8. The State Department announced the withdrawal of the “ black ” list of firms sympathetic to the Axis. At the same time, it issued a warning that the withdrawal of the names did not give them a clean bill of health and
did not mean that the programme for eliminating Axis external influences would be slackened. It added that the action was taken in concurrence with the British and Canadian Governments, which were closing similar lists. The secretary of the department, Mr Dean Acheson. said that some wartime controls remained, but withdrawals of the list would remove most of the trade blocks used in war-time. He said the Government had other powers to deal with Nazi trade infiuences. A message from London states that the black list of 5800 merchants in neutral countries with whom it has been illegal for British firms to trade is being abolished. The French Government is also removing its ban.
