IMPROVED SEATING

NEW ZEALAND TRAINS DESIGNS TO BE TESTED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 9. New first and second class seating for New Zealand trains was shown at the Petone Railway Workshops to-day. The second-class type revolves like the present first-class seat, and has a dividing arm in the two-seat units. The new revolving mechanism permits the seat to be pulled away from the wall of the carriage before reversing, so that a greater seat depth is possible. There is more foot room beneath the seats and long-legged pasengers will be able to dispense with the footrests and place their feet under the seat in front.

The first-class seats have approximately 14 different slopes of back instead of four, and their tray, units have supports entirely independent of the seat back when pulled out. The designs will be tested on the Main Trunk before being finally adopted.
