WHALE CHASERS
FIHY CATCHES RECORDED (P.A.) BLENHEIM, July 9. Though operations have been more difficult recently because of southerly winds in Cook Strait, the Te Awaiti (Marlborough Sounds )whalers have 50 catches to their credit so far this season. The southerly swell has caused the whales to take a wide sweep when approaching Cook Strait, and the chasers have had to go about 10 miles out before making contact. It is expected that activities will be increased shoi’tly, as the parent whales set out on the northward journey at this time of the year. If they come in their usual numbers it may be that last season’s catch of 107,-which is one of the best in the station’s history, will be exceeded.
