OBSERVERS FROM BIKINI INTERVAL BETWEEN TESTS (P.A.J AUCKLAND, July 6. “A break from Bikini ” was how members of the American scientific party described the reason for their visit to New Zealand. Two of the atom bomb observers, Dr Karl T. Compton and Mr Bradley Dewey, are taking advantage of the time between the first and second tests on July 1 and July 27 respectively to address scientific organisations in Australia. The others, in their own words, just “ tagged along ” for the trip. The party expects to remain in New Zealand for several days before flying to Sydney and Melbourne. Several of the scientists hope to visit Wellington. Other members of the party, travelling, in a Skymaster, included’Senator L. Saltonstall, Republican member of the United States Senate for Massachusetts, who is attending the Bikini tests as a member of the Presidential Evaluations Commission established to report personally to President Truman. The accompanying staff comprised Lieutenant-colonel John A. Derry, secretary to the Evaluations Board Major John C. Healey and Major Russ Symonto.wne. technical assistants, and Lieutenants W P. Anderson and K, C Myers, flight aides. Two Australian passengers were also carried. They were Commander S H. K. Spurgeon, R.A.N., who was the Australian observer at Bikini, and Mr E. W. Mac Alpine, a Sydney journalist. who also watched the experiments.
