THE MAGNETIC POLE

EXPEDITION'S REPORT CALCULATIONS CONFIRMED (Rec. 0.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 8. Although the special flights by the R.A.F. Lancaster Aries last year failed to establish the exact position of the magnetic pole, the indications the expedition obtained confirmed the calculations of the Astronomer Royal, Sir Harold ’ Spencer Jones, that it is in a position 76 degrees north 102 degrees west on Bathurst Island. This is 300 miles north-north-west of the position on Boothia Peninsula where Amundsen observed it, and where it has been shown on all navigation charts since then.

The captain of the Aries, Wing Commander McKinley, says many more ground and air observations would have to be carried out to ascertain the position thoroughly. Expeditions were preparing to follow the flight of the Aries.
