WEATHER IN DUNEDIN

LOW RAINFALL FIGURES JUNE A VERY DRY MONTH While Dunedin lies in the grip of a series of hard frosts, which, according to current weather forecasts, are likely to continue, residents may take some comfort from the knowledge that, although the temperatures during the past few weeks have not been particularly comfortable, at least Dunedin has the distinction of having the lowest rainfall of all the main centres for the month of June. In the North Island, Wellington and Auckland fared badly by comparison with this city, the capital being rained on to the impressive extent of 5.56 inches, while Auckland registered 3.98 inches of rain. Christchurch. which ’s usually expected to show lower figures than any of the other main centres, had 3.44 inches of rain for the month, Dunedin’s 1-9” inches being a very modest effort by comparison. An average of the weather statistics for the principal centres published in the Official Year Book during the past few years shows that Dunedin is not, in fact, the perpetually moist locality that critical northerners would like to believe it is. While it does suffer slightly by comparison with the northern cities in the matter of mean temperatures and hours of bright sunshine, it is well down ;he list so far as average annual rainfall is concerned. Auckland heads the list with 184 rainy days and a total of 49.82 inches, and is followed by Wellington with 162 rainy days and a total of 42.91 inches. Dunedin’s average of 161 rainy days produced a total of 39.96 inches, while Christchurch, with 126 rainy days, had the lowest total of 25.56 inches. Wellington’s average of bright sunshine was 2050 hours, with a mean temperature of 54.05 degrees, and Auckland had 2033 hours of sun and a mean temperature of 58.95 degrees. Christchurch, in spite of its low rainfall, had 1967 hours of sunshine and a mean temperature of 52.45 degrees, while Dunedin. with 1711 hours of sun, had a mean temperature of 51.45 degrees.
