Monday, July 8 (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) Charge Dismissed Robert Butterfield (Mr H. L. Gibson), a salesman, aged 26 years, pleaded not guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor car.—Dr E. R. Harty, called by the police, said that he had examined the accused at 2 a.m. on June 22. Although he had obviously consumed alcohol, it had not made him incapable Of driving a car.— The magistrate in dismissing the charge, said that the accused should be given the benefit of the doubt arising from a divergence of opinion disclosed by the evidence in the case. Girls and Youth Charged “These girls have been living the life of vagrants,” Chief Detective T. Y. Hall said when Joyce Josish Green, aged 18, a housemaid-waitress, of Paroa, West Coast, and Beatrice Joy Webster, aged 17, a housemaid-waitress, of Runanga, appeared on a charge of theft. They pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing women’s clothing and shoes, a gold ring and cross on a chain, valued at £9 16s lOd, the property of Lenora Violet Kellett and another. Asking for a remand, Chief Detective Hall said that the accuseds’ parents lived on the West Coast. The younger accused was an escapee from the Mount Magdala Home, Christchurch. The girls had been living anywhere about the city, he said, in reply to the magistrate. They were irresponsible girls, and they had been associating with men and visiting ships since they arrived in Dunedin a fortnight ago.— Both girls were remanded in custody for a week. John Raymond Warrick Kellett, aged 20, a soldier and truck driver, who appeared on the same charge as that brought against Green and Webster, was described by Chief Detective Hall as “ a perfect nuisance about the town.” He had been associating with Green and Webster. Kellett belonged to the J Force, but the chief detective questioned whether the army would want him.—Mr C. J. L. White said that Kellett came to Dunedin with the girls, and they stayed with his sister. The girls alleged that he gave the stolen goods to them, but he said that they stole them. Kellett was due to, go away with the J Force in a fortnight.—On the application of the police, the magistrate granted a remand until July 15. Alexander Fuller Spratt, a bookbinder, aged 22 years, was charged with obstructing a police constable in the execution of his duty and with casting offensive matter. He pleaded guilty.—Senior Sergeant H. J. Hogg said that Constable Turner had been on duty in Princes street when he had arrested a man and a woman who were drunk, and the defendant: who had been casting offensive matter Outside the Central Station. the defendant had endeavoured to persuade the constable not to arrest the other two. The woman had lain on the ground and had refused to get up, and the defendant had tajeen the constable by the arm, after having been warned twice to stand clear.—The magistrate dismissed the charge of obstructing the police, and convicted and fined the defendant £2 on the other charge.

James Graham Yulle, 21 years of age, whose address wqs given as “ England,” was remanded until July 15 on a charge of deserting his ship, the Tongariro. at Wellington on May 18.— Chief Detective Hall said that Yulle was arrested on Saturday afternoon.— Mr C. H Stevens said on the defendant’s behalf that he had since been working in Dunedin as a moulder. He was an excellent workman. Yulle had joined the ship at Hongkong, and it was questionable whether he had deserted—The magistrate fixed bail at £25 with one surety of £25, and Yulle was ordered to report daily 1.0 the police. George Henry Carey, aged 36, a taxidriver, of Alexandra, was remanded to appear at Alexandra on July 30 on a charge of the theft of £l6B 2s 9d, the property of the Alexandra Highland Pipe Band Mr C H. Stevens, wnc appeared for Carey, did not oppose the remand. Other Cases Richard Rupert McCann was fined £1 8s and costs (12s) on a charge of casting offensive matter. Allan Johnson Mayfield, a student, was fined £1 and costs (10s) on a charge of behaving in an offensive manner in a public place.
