NOTES FROM RICCARTON

LALLA MEER RETIRED (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, July 8. The Canterbury Jockey Club seems on the way to a very successful meeting next month. Most of the available jumping talent is engaged in the chief events, though Our Nation (Great Northern Steeplechase), Brookby Song (Winter Steeplechase), and Epping (Manawatu Steeplechase) are notable absentees. Riccarton stables have Night Prince, (Roman Son, and Prince Dolomite in the steeplechases; Lunaria Test Pilot. Big Top, and Prince Dolomite in the hurdle races, besides 16 horses in the Winter Cup. Boolamskee. who finished third in the Elloughton Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday, will make his next apoearance at Riccarton, where he is booked for hurdle races, a department in which he performed well last winter. Mr J. S. Shaw will retire at the end of this month from his position as a trotting stipendiary steward, in which he was a great, success. He has not made definite plans for the future, but probably he will start off with a holiday. In order to be prepared for any contingency, he has applied for trainers’ licences under the racing and trotting codes. The four-year-old Lalla Meer will do no more racing. She has disappointed this season and she will be retired to the stud. It is probable she will be mated with Wild Chase. C. C. McCarthy has four horses in work in view of racing at Riccarton in the ’next few weeks. They are Foxchase and Swingalong, both in the Winter Cup, also Altruist and Indian Dawn. The four are all in good order. A. McAulay. well-known trainer, is at present in hospital, where he was operated on last week.
