INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY MOVE IN EASTERN AUSTRIA (Rec. 9 p.m.) VIENNA, July 6. The Russian command in Austria, in a sudden unilateral move, announced that £5,500,000 worth of industrial property in Eastern Austria had passed into Russian hands, together with all other German external assets in the Russian zone. The Chancellor, Dr Figl, has called a special meeting of Cabinet.
The Russians for months past have been taking over control of properties in Eastern Austria which are classified as German assets and subject to seizure for reparations. The new order, which was signed by Colonel-general Kurasov, commander-in-chief of the Russian troops in Austria, and was apparently intended to legalise all previous seizures and to pave the way for the complete confiscation of properties claimed under the Russian interpretation of Potsdam. The United States disputes the Russian interpretation, asserting that property taken forcibly by the Germans since the Anschluss could not be classified as German. General Mark Clark sent messages to the Austrian Government and the Russian Command, advising caution.
