TROOPS USE CLUBS

STRIKE LEADERS ARRESTED (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, July 7. British troops had to use-clubs and tear gas last night to disperse hundreds of Italians milling in the centre of Trieste, demonstrating against the decision of the Foreign Ministers’ Conference. Only a few Americans were involved, says the American Associated Press correspondent, but the Eightyeighth Division stood by ready to go into action if the situation became worse. One American military policeman was hard-pressed after coming to the rescue of American newspapermen attacked by the mob, but British troops clubbed the leader of the attack to the ground and prevented further violence.

Reuter’s Trieste correspondent says that the police, on instructions from the Allied military authorities, issued summonses against 11 members of the Trieste Strike Committee for failing to comply with an order to call off the general strike.
