(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, July 7. Ben Adam outclassed the field in the Cheviot Cup. He was fifth most of the way and followed Real Nugget, Forecast, and Cumnock to the straight, where he came through on the rails for an easy win, while Cumnock outstayed the othei; pair, with a long gap to the rest of the field. .Trial Handicap

The Trial Handicap was run in three divisions. In the first Tauranga was fourth i ill the straight was reached, but then moved up to beat Symetra in the last few strides. Scintillante waited on the leaders in the second division, but dashed up at the home turn and had the race in hand 50 yards from the post. Lodestone followed Guidance and Dilbar to the straight in the third division and then look the lead, but only stalled off Gloworm’s late challenge. Domett Handicap Excalibur made a slow start in the Domett Handicap, but took the lead five furlongs from home. He was challenged in the straight, but drew out to beat Rising Monarch easily, with Monitress and Julie close up. Mina Handicap Rey Potts followed Carisbrook for more than a mile in the Mina Handicap, clearing out in the last furlong for an easy win, while Bobbie Burns, always well placed, hung on for third. Spotswood Handicap Super Globe, with no previous racing, was well back early in the first division of the Spotswood Handicap, but made a brilliant run at the home turn to win easily from Abel Tasman and Mischief, who had a great battle over the final furlong. Scholarship made amends for his defeat earlier in the day by winning the second division comfortably. Bollard Handicap After taking the lead more than a mile from home Excalibur had his second win of the day when he trotted solidly all the way in the Bollard Handicap. He moved up gradually and was in front with three furlongs to go. Parnassus Handicap Rey Potts was another horse to complete a double with a hollow victory in the Parnassus Handicap. He moved up just after going half a mile, and though only third to the straight, he had the race in safe keeping. . Mackenzie Handicap

There was a surprise in the Mackenie Handicap, two outsiders beating the win favourite, Scottish Lord, into third place. Charles Rex followed Scottish Lord and Ovend for half the journey and then took the lead, holding off a strong challenge from Bankstock in the straight. The winner returned to the birdcage after doing his preliminary to have his front shoes removed.
