OBITUARY
MR J. H. HARKNESS (P.A.) WESTPORT, June 21. The death has occurred of Mr James Hamilton Harkness, who for the past 37 years 'had been a very prominent citizen of Westport. He was born at Richmond, Nelson, in 1858 and was educated at Nelson College, graduating in 1888. He became headmaster of Bishop’s School in 1879, the Recfton District High School in 1895, and the Westport District High School in 1909. He was president, for a term, of the New Zealand Educational Institute, secretary of the Buffer Progress League, a member of the Nelson Education Board, and Mayor of Westport from 1927 to 1933. Mr Harkness was a member of the Church of England, being a lay reader for 50 years, a member of synod, and a church warden for a long period. He was a well-known Freemason. In 1930-31 he was proGrand Master for New Zealand, and in 1918 was first grand principal for the Royal Arch degree.
