NATIONAL MEMORIAL

YOUNG FARMERS' CLUBS SPECIAL COLLEGE “WINGS” (P.A.) INVERCARGILL. June 12. The young farmers’ clubs national memorial to members killed in World War II will take the form of special winds added to Massey and Lincoln Agricultural Colleges for the accommodation of short course students. This decision was made by the annual conference of the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs held in Invercargill. Opposition to the proposal was voiced by members of the Western Southland District Committee, who said they felt the memorial should not be wholly utilitarian. The idea of a national memorial was first mooted at the annual meeting of the organisation in 1942, and since then various proposals have been considered. In its final report and recommendation. submitted to-day, a subcommittee . set up at the last annual meeting recommended that the adoption of a scheme for the provision of accommodation for short course students at the two agricultural colleges by building in each pase a special “wing" for the use of young farmers’ club members. It was recommended that the £20,000 necessary should be collected over two years if possible and that quotas be as follows: Auckland, £6500; Wellington, £6500; Canterbury, £4000; and Otago-Sofithland, £3OOO. The Dominion Executive approved the sub-committee’s recommendations and the college authorities approved the scheme. The recommendation was adopted. The following office-bearers were elected: Grand patron, Mr L. J. Wild; patrons—Sir William Perry, Sir Heaton Rhodes, Sir Theodore Rigg, the Minister of Agriculture (Mr B. Roberts), Messrs W. Goodfellow, A. C. Cameron, W. F. McLaren, Professor E. R. Hudson, Professor G. S. Peren; president, Mr S. G. V. Avery (Wellington); vicepresident. Mr J. Barclay (Canterbury); auditor, Mr O. G.
