COAL INDUSTRY
SUBSIDIES OR STATE OWNERSHIP
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 12. Subsidies were necessary to keep the mining industry operating at full production level and to keep down the price of coal to consumers, said the Minister of National Employment, Mi A. MeLagan, at the annual conference of the Federation of Labour. State ownership of the mines, he added, was the only means of eliminating subsidies to mine owners.
