DUNEDIN PILOT
AWARD OF CROIX DE GUERRE
Flight Lieutenant Lloyd G. Sparrow, who has been awarded the French Croix De Guerre, returned to New Zealand by the Arawa recently. Flight Lieutenant Sparrow left in February, 1942, for Canada, where he qualified as a navigator, and received a commission, after which he was posted to a “Special Duties” Squadron in England. He was detailed to navigate his plane by night to “pin-point” locations in the French mountains, where
the necessary men, munitions, and supplies were dropped at various places for the resistance movement which was being organised, and it was in recognition of his skill and courage in carrying out these arduous duties that he received the Croix De Guerre. He was posted on D-Day to tow gliders with paratroops to France, and while, as he says, “ things were hot,” .had a good view of the landing on that great day. Flight Lieutenant Sparrow., is a grandson of the late Mr Joseph Sparrow, and was educated at the Maori Hill School and the Otago Boys’ High School. When he enlisted he was on the staff of Messrs J. and A. P. Scott, Ltd., to whom he will return after his discharge from the air force.
