SPECTATORS THRILLED

It is a rare occurrence for a scratch runner to get round his field and win the races staged at half-time at Carisbrook during the Rugby football season, and the large crowd showed its appreciation of a great effort ivhen it accorded a well-deserved ovation to W. H. Nelson when he won the Civil Service Club's Postal Cup Mile Race from scratch on Saturday. Nelson ran with machine-like precision from end to end, to register 4.41 for the distance on a heavy track. He was into his stride from the gun, and did a brisk first lap, picking up his nearest opponents, who were off 45 yards, early in the second. He continued to move beautifully, and at the bell lay fifth. His last lap was a thriller, and as he flashed round the final bend and took the lead at the bottom of the straight the crowd rose to its feet and cheered him on to a magnificent victory. On his present form it is hard to say to what heights Nelson may rise, but a New Zealand cross-country title this season is well within his reach, and after that even higher honours should come his way.
