RETAIL SALESMEN

SUBSIDISED TRAINING REHABILITATION SCHEME The Rehabilitation Board has decided to extend its subsidised training scheme for ex-servicemen to include training for retail salesmanship. Classes of retailers to which the scheme will apply are not exhaustively defined, but among those the board has in mind are approved sellers of furniture, footwear, mercery and general drapery. Two years is the maximum time over which training will be given. The trainee’s wage, starting at £5 15s a week, rises in three 26-weekly periods to £6 7s 6d, and in the final 26 weeks to the award rate. In the first, second and third periods, the employer pays £4'os 6d. £5 2s, and £6 7s 6d, and in the final period the full award wage. The employer must then engage the trainee for another year at least. It is also provided that the trainee must be enabled to take full advantage of any specialised courses of training the Retailer’s Federation institute. Special subsidised training conditions already exist for the grocery and butchery trades.
