A LISTENER’S GUIDE
Music and the Listener: A Guide to Musical Understanding. By Keith Barry (Robertson and Mullens, Ltd.) 2s 9d. In the small compass of 125 pages. Dr Barry attempts to provide a technical background for the better enjoyment of all music. The least that can be asked in such a case is that the author give the correct “ rules and regulations” of the “game of music to the unsuspecting listener and treats him as an intelligent being able to judge musical worth for himself. Simplification when writing on a complex subject for the layman is unavoidable, but accuracy should not be made to suffer on that account. . Although this booklet is attractively written and has some valuable chapters on the mechanics of musical production, readers might find that they are left in a worse state of uncertainty over the form, development, and significance of music than they were before entrusting themselves to this guide. The author’s opinions are decidedly his own, and worthy of every respect, but facts should not be made to fit opinions, however charmingly they are put before a lay public. S. K.
