TROLLEY BUS ROUTES

RECOMMENDATIONS TO COUNCIL ORDER OF PRIORITY A recommendation covering the stages in which the City Council should proceed with the change in the transport system from trams to trolley buses is contained in a report which the Transport Committee will present at the special meeting of the council to-morrow. The report points out that the routes which it proposes are subject to such variations as the council may later decide to adopt, but it suggests that the first section of the electric tramways to be converted should be that from the Stock Exchange to Opoho, and that, in respect of cable routes, a high priority should be given to the Stuart street line. The stages recommended are as follows: STAGE I Exchange to Gardens and Opoho.— Commencing from the tram depot, across Princes street, along Anderson’s Bay road, thence via Crawford street,

Water street, Bond street, thence via Castle street, Howe street King street to Gardens corner, where there will be a turning loop, the route from that point to Opoho to be via the existing tram track, but extending to and around Granview crescent and back to Signal Hill road. STAGE H Gardens to Normanby.—This route follows the existing tram route, with a turning loop at Normanby. STAGE 111 Exchange to Anderson’s Bay and Tahuna.— Commencing at intersection of Crawford street and Anderson’s Bay road, thence to Anderson’s Bay road via the existing tram route to the intersection of Silverton street and Spottiswoode street. A branch line to Tahuna commencing at Royal crescent, thence to Bowen street, Culling street, Tahuna road, and back to Royal crescent to meet the turn at Bowen street. STAGE IV Exchange to St. Kilda and Forbury Park.— Commencing Bond street, into Lower High street, Princes street, thence by the existing tram route to St. Kilda terminus, where a turning loop will be provided. A branch line to Forbury Park from King Edward street, Bay View road, Main avenue, Forbury crescent, Moreau street, Council street, Bird street, to Richardson street and return over the same route. STAGE V Exchange to St., Clair.— Commencing from Cargill’s corner, thence via the existing tramway route to the Esplanade, thence via the Esplanade, Beach street, Bedford street, returning via Forbury road. STAGE VI Exchange to Caversham. —Commencing from Princes street near Maitland street, via South road to terminus at Lookout Point, where a loop will be provided for return. STAGE VII Exchange to Gardens Comer, via George street and Logan Park.—The main route will follow the existing track along Princes street and George street to the Gardens. The branch to Logan Park will run from George street via Albany street, Forth street. -Union street, and Harbour terrace as far as Dundas street, where a loop will be provided for the return. STAGE VHI Octagon to Kaikorai, replacing the existing cable system. Commencing at the Octagon, up Stuart street, Albert street, School street and Taieri road as far as Bunting’s Store. The return will be over the same route but branching off at Moray place into Princes street at Sayoy Corner, thence to the starting point at the Octagon. Octagon to Roslyn and Maori Hill. —Commencing from Stuart street terminus at the Octagon, thence via Stuart street, York place, Robin Hood to Leven street junction, along City road and Highgate to the present Maori Hill bus terminus at Drivers road. STAGE IX Rattray street to Roslyn and Maori Hill.— This route to be operated on a double circuit with Mormngton. Route is Rattray street, following the existing cable line to Arthur street, thence round Robin Hood to left at Leven street, thence right to run parallel with existing cable tramway up Ross street to Highgate, where the turning loop will be provided. STAGE X City to Mornington.—To be run on a double circuit with Roslyn. Route is via High street, following existing cable route High street, Eglinton road, to present terminus, thence via Mailer street to Kenmure road, where a turning loop will be provided. FUTURE EXPANSION The report adds that the committee realises that, as a matter for future policy, there are other sections of the city and suburbs which would naturally fall into the category of points to which extensions to the trolley bus system as now proposed could be considered. These could be tentatively listed as follows: The Pitt street route to Cannmgton r extension along Mornington road to Lookout Point. Service to the new Government subdivision at Corstorphine. A service to the Kew area. An extension through Anderson’s Bay. Extension to Dalmore when further development takes place. A branch service from Highgate to Prospect Park. A service for the Maryhill area via Elgin road. Consideration could be given to these extensions when the main systeam as now proposed is in full operation, and, in that connection, the report continues, it may be mentioned that, on completion of the changeover, certain funds will become available which will provide the capital required for a resonable programme of extension as traffic demands develop. , If the foregoing proposals are approved, the committee further recommends that it be empowered to call tenders at the earliest possible date for the supply of the trolley buses and overhead equipment, for delivery In the stages to meet the department’s requirements In the matter of the changeover. These tenders would then

be available for determination as soon as the statutory loan authorisation shall have been obtained.
