MILITARY PROBLEMS

MIDDLE EAST DEFENCE MONTGOMERY’S TOUR LONDON, June 10. Field-marshal Viscount Montgomery arrived at Cairo after a flight in which he circled over Benghazi and Tobruk and flew low across El Alamein. It was his first visit to the Western Desert since the victorious campaign. The British Embassy stated that Field-marshal Montgomery will be staying in Cairo three or four days,

after which he will visit Palestine, Greece and Italy, studying various military problems connected with the Middle East.

The Egyptian Prime Minister, Sidky Pasha, announced that he would meet Field-marshal Montgomery to-morrow. Reuter’s says that this engagement has aroused a great deal of interest. It may be purely a courtesy call, but many Egyptians hope that the visit may positively influence the AngloEgyptian Treaty negotiations. British Army headquarters in Cairo announced to-day that Wingate Barracks, near Cairo, had been handed over to Egypt. The announcement says: “Thus one further link has been forged in the implementation of the British policy of evacuation.”
