NARROW ESCAPE
PARTIAL COLLAPSE OF CHIMNEY OAMARU NORTH SCHOOL A stone chimney above the main entrance to the Oamaru North School partly collapsed yesterday morning, and had it happened one minute earlier the lives of some of the pupils would have been endangered. One side of the top of the chimney completely collapsed, and fell on to the roof and on to the pavement below, where the pupils assemble before going into their classes. "If the bell had been rung a minute earlier, a loss of life might have resulted,” said the headmaster (Mr E. H. Heward) to a Daily Times representative. Mr Heward conducted the reporter around the school and pointed out serious cracks in the stonework structure, both inside and outside the building, most of them having occurred since Mr Heward was appointed to the school two years and a-half ago.
“ In spite of all the efforts of the committee in an endeavour to make a start on jdie new school," said Mr Heward, “ nothing so far has been done.”
