OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM NEILL The death of Mr William Neill, of Maheno, on June 4, closed a period of faithful and inspiring service to the many bodies with which he had been connected He entered with heart and soul upon the many duties entrusted to him, and his quiet and generous nature earned I him the highest esteem, not only in the township of Maheno, but also throughout the *Mr Neill was born in Sandymount in 1890. and was the son of John Craig Neill, a farmer, and had carried on that occupation successfully at Maheno since the early part of the century. As a y°tmg man, he took a keen interest in the Oddfellows' Lodge, which he joined in 1909, and at the time of his death he had held office as secretary of the Hope of Maheno Lodge for 27 years. He also held the office of district deputy grand master of thp Order. On the outbreak of the First World War, Mr Neill went overseas and served with the Ist N.Z.E.F. On his return to Maheno, his enthusiastic interest and support were given to the welfare of returned men in his capacity as an executive member of the Maheno Returned Soldiers’ Association Mr Neill was for some years a director of the Co-operative Dairy Company and a member of the Maheno Patriotic Committee and Maheno Athletic Club. At the time of his death he was president of the Maheno branch of Federated Farmers. He is survived by his wife and a son and a daughter, Mr John and Miss Joan Neill (both of Maheno).
