*Mr David Forsyth, of the Dunedin North Intermediate School, left for Wellington by the express yesterday. He will be engaged for some weeks on business connected with teachers’ salaries. Mr J. A. Smith, postmaster at Thornbury has been promoted to the position of postmaster at Clinton in succession to Mr C. R. Martin, who has been appointed postmaster at South Dunedin. Mr A. H. Cameron, president of the Otago Rugby Union, and Mr D. C Jolly will leave to-morrow for Wellington to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union. Mr Thomas Robson Bradshaw has been elected Mayor of the Borough of West. Harbour in succession to Mr E. J. Taylor, whose death occurred recently. The nomination of Mr Bradshaw, who represents Rothesay, was the only one received for the office. The senior medical officer of health at Auckland. Dr T. J. Hughes,, will retire to-day after over 32 years’ service with the Health Department, most of which have been sent in the city. He will be succeeded by his present assistant, Dr L S. Davis. Reference to the death of Mr Arthur Symonds, which occurred at Lower Hutt recently, was made by the president (Mr A. H. Cameron) at the weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union last night. Mr Cameron said that Mr Symonds, who had been a member of the Zingari-Rich-mond Football Club, played for Otago In 1911-12. A motion of sympathy was carried. Colonel D. G. Radcliffe, N.Z.M.C., formerly of Balclutha, and now of Dunedin, who returned to New Zealand by the Athlone Castle, arrived in Dunedin by the express from the north yesterday afternoon. He commanded the -New Zealand General Hospital in Egypt, and was later in charge of the No. 1 General Hospital in Italy. The loss suffered by the Otago-Southland branch of the Workers’ Educational Association during the past year by the death of Mr W. J. Morrell, chancellor of the University of Otago, and for many years a vice-president of the W.E.A.; Mr J. Gerrard, a keen member of several administrative bodies within the movement; and Mr George McCracken, retired tutororganiser, was the subject of mention at the annual meeting of the branch last night. A tribute to the work of the late Dr R. W. Souter in his capacity as director of the Otago-Southland branch of the Workers’ Educational Association was paid at the annual meeting of the branch last night. The president (Mr E. W. Wilson) spoke of Dr Souter’s determination to safeguard adult education from all danger of political control or interference and to retain the close association With the four university colleges. A motion was carried recording the association’s indebtedness to Dr Souter’s leadership and work.
