Ministerial The Minister of Health, Mr A. H. Nordvrieyer, arrived in Dunedin by car 'last evening. He paid a visit to the Waipiata Sanatorium yesterday, and previously made calls at Alexandra and Clyde to confer with the Vincent Hospital Board and investigate the staffing problems of tlie Maternity Hospital.. He will be engaged on departmental business this morning, and will leave in the afternoon for Oamaru. Mr C. R. Spackman will leave by the express this morning for Napier, where he will act as adjudicator for the vocal and instrumental classes at the Easter musical competitions. It was agreed at the meeting of the Council of the Otago University yesterday afternoon that Professor F. Gordon Bell should be acting dean during the absence overseas of Dr C. E. Hercus, dean of the medical faculty. Bishop Fltchett has appointed Mr A N. Kaggitt chancellor of the Diocese of Dunedin, in' succession to the late Mr J. A. Cook. The office of chancellor was held from 1881 to 1897 by the late Mr B. C. Haggitt, father of the newly-appointed chancellor. The Otago Harbour Board, at its meeting last night, passed resolutions of sympathy with the relatives of Mr E. J. Tavlor, former Mayor of West Harbour, and Mr W. J. A. McGregor, chairman of the Bluff Harbour Board. Reference to the death of Mr J. Shepherd, former member of the board, was made at the monthly meeting of., the Otago Education Board yesterday. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried. At a meeting of the Royal Dunedin Male Choir last evening a vote of sympathy was passed to the conductor, Mr Ernest Drake, on the death of his brother. Canon W. T. Drake, of Hastings. A curtailed practice was held, and was conducted by Mr A. Fleming, the deputy conductor. Commodore G. H. Faulkner, First Naval Member of the New Zealand Naval Board, who is making a tour of the South Island, arrived in Dunedin yesterday from Queenstown and Invercargill. He will be engaged on official duties today and will leave for the north tomorrow. „ _ _ „ The resignations of Dr C. E. Hercus, dean of the medical faculty, and Professor F. G. Soper, professor of chemistry, as members of the council were received at the meeting of the Council of the Otago University yesterday afternoon. Both will leave shortly on a visit to EngWing Commander Lloyd J. Joel, D.F.C. and bar, who has been spending two months’ leave in Dunedin with his parents, left by the express yesterday morning for Auckland, where he will begin his return flight to England. Wing Commander Joel has accepted the offer of a permanent commission in the R.A.F. Captain W. Rolling, who is at present employed by the Wanganui Harbour Board, was appointed by the Otago Harbour Board last night to the position of dredge master and assitant pilot. It was stated that Captain Rolling had formerly been master of a coastal vessel trading to Dunedin. . Dr F. J. Turner, lecturer in geology at the Otago University, who had resigned his position on his appointment as one of the professors of geology in the University of California, was entertained at afternoon tea yesterday by members of the council of the University. The chancellor, the Very Rev. D. C. Herron, said that Dr Turner was going to the United States as an ambassador from their university. They regretted very much that he was leaving them, but they were very proud of the fact that his abilities were so highly regarded that he was qualified to take up the position to which he had been appointed. It was the first time in the history of the university that one of their lecturers, had been appointed to such an important post. Mr Herron said that Dr Turner had been a brilliant student and had done a very good job for the Otago University. They wished him well in his new sphere of activities. Dr Turner, in replying, paid a tribute to the teaching he had received from various professors and said that he hoped to uphold the prestige of the University of Otago in his new home.
