SUDDEN DEATH IN HOTEL
AUCKLAND BUSINESSMAN Mr Joseph Callil Sayegh, a wellknown Auckland business man, died suddenly on Friday night in an hotel in the city. Mr Sayegh, who had attended the conference of justices of the peace in Invercargill, had arrived that evening from the south, and intended going north the following day. Death occurred after he had retired to his room, but before he had gone to bed, and the body was discovered by an employee at 7 o’clock on Saturday morning. No inquest will be necessary. Mr Sayegh had a business in Queen street, Auckland, and over a number of years was a prominent figure in the city’s public life. He had been a member of the Auckland City Council, Harbour Board, Hospital Board, Transport Board and Power Board, and the Auckland licensing bench. He was born in Syria in 1884, and he left with his parents for Sydney when three years of age. After seven years in Sydney, he lived in Wellington for two years, and then spent the rest of his life in Auckland. He was educated by the Marist Brothers. The funeral will be held in Auckland.
