DRIVERS’ LICENCES
CENTRAL REGISTER CRITICISED “THIN END OF WEDGE” (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Mar. 29. The opinion that the proposal of the Transport Department to compile a central register of motor drivers’ licences was “ the thin end of the wedge ” and would end in the department taking over from the local bodies the licensing of drivers was expressed by Mr L. H. Clapham, Mayor of Hawera, at the Municipal Conference ’to-day. Several other delegates supported Mr Clapham and suggested that a new department, or an addition of 40 or 50 clerks to the Transport Department, would be necessary. The president, Mr J. W. Andrews, Mayor of Lower Hutt, who said that the reasons given by the Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. A. Lawrenson) appeared logical and reasonable, considered that opposition would be an invitation to the department to take over the licensing. A Hawera remit expressing opposition to the department’s proposal was lost.
