GOVERNMENT APPOINTEES SEATS ON LOCAL BODIES (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Mar. 29. The position of Government appointees on local bodies was briefly discussed by the Municipal Conference this morning, when it was decided to approve of the Local Government Committee’s recommendation that the policy of putting Government men on harbour boards, fire boards, and borough bodies should be discontinued. The Mayor of Rotorua (Mr G. Cusack), said the Rotorua Borough had two Government nominees on its council. “Do you like them? ” asked the chairman, Mr J. W. Andrews. “No,” replied Mr Cusack. “We feel that the time has arrived when Government nominees should not be on the council. The borough was origin-, ally endowed by the Government, which took the right to appoint two councillors.” After a brisk debate, the conference agreed with a recommendation of the Local Government Committee that all members of local bodies should be paid for’ attendance at meetings. The committee suggested £1 a meeting with a maximum of £52 a year. Conference agree that road board chairmen should be paid a maximum of £2OO a year, and that the payment for town board chairmen should be raised from £SO to a maximum of £2OO. .
