PASSPORTS REFUSED
AUSTRALIAN TENNIS PLAYERS MINISTER’S DECISION SYDNEY, Map. 28. The Minister of Immigration, Mr A. A,. Calwell, will not issue passports for the Australian lawn tennis teams to go to Wimbledon this year. This was announced at a special meeting of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia, which was called to discuss the invitation from the Wimbledon officials. It is understood that, had the passports issue not arisen, the council would have • reversed its earlier decision not to send a team. : , .J,■ The president of. the New South Wales Lawn Tennis Association, Mr Brian Fuller, declared that Mr Calwell’s action was wholly unjustified. He declared, that the Minister had no i right to refuse a passport to any Australian who'desired to visit any part of the-Empire. The Minister’s decision has evoked other outbursts among tennis enthusiasts in all States.
