ALLEGED ESPIONAGE
RUSSIAN NAVAL OFFICER ARRESTED AT PORTLAND NEW YORK, Mar. 27. A Russian naval officer, Lieutenant Nicolai Gregorovich Redin, was charged at Portland, Oregon, with obtaining information about a destroyer tender, U.S.S. Yellowstone, for the advantage of Russia, and with'inducing another to obtain plans, documents and writing relating to a unit of the United States Navy. He is also accused of acting against, the peace and dignity of the United States. Redin demanded to see the Soviet Consul, and was remanded without bail. The United States Navy Department described the Yellowstone as a new type of destroyer lender and termed it a “ floating navy yard,” capable of all kinds of repairs. Redin had been head of the Soviet Purchasing Commission Office at Seattle since the staff was curtailed at the end of the war. A Canadian policy official said Redin’s arrest had no connection with the Canadian espionage cases.
